Mohawk, Briefly

Ezra, the boy who asked us to shave his head last year, has been growing his hair out for a few months now. I think the last time he cut it was some time in the Fall, and when it came up again to cut it a couple of months ago, he said he wanted a reverse mohawk. I said no with the excuse that it would be much too distracting at school. So he said, “Fine, then I’m going to grow it out.” Out is really the operative word here — his hair doesn’t get long so much as big. And big it had gotten.

I figured once the weather changed and it was hot I’d have another chance to get him to cut it. This week’s 80 degree temps worked in my favor and Monday night was haircut night. I took a couple of [goofy] before pics.

Apparently he and Bruce made a deal that he could have his mohawk (regular, not reverse) for pictures.

We actually thought it looked pretty cute. But as agreed, the rest came off next.

He reported that many of the kids at school asked if they could rub his head the next day. And one girl told him she thought he looked better with this haircut. Then he said maybe he’d keep it like this all the time. We’ll see.

Library Reinstall

This weekend we finished a task I’ve been looking forward to — reinstalling our Little Free Library at our new house. Last weekend we found our plaque which we thought might have been lost in the move since it wasn’t with the library when it came off the truck. I may be a little irrationally emotional about this library; finding the plaque brought me to tears.

Untitled

We spent much of Saturday morning running around getting supplies — wood for the new post, gravel for the hole, etc. When we finally had everything, we split into skilled and unskilled labor. I [unskilled] dug the hole. My first experience with the post-hole digger.

Untitled

Bruce [skilled, of course] MacGyvered a solar garden light into its parts to fit in the library. Let’s just say there was soldering and hot glue involved, not to mention a recycled peanut butter jar lid.

Untitled

IMG_4491

And he built a new post.

Untitled

Eventually (hours later than we had imagined … where are the kids anyway?) we were ready to install.

And fill with books!

IMG_4486

And the light works!

IMG_4495

So fun to be back in the library business. I’m picking up where I left off taking regular (daily-ish) pictures of the books inside and posting them on Instagram here. Follow if you’re interested!

Miracles

I spent much of Friday cleaning and de-cluttering because we were having a guest for dinner (Bruce’s former colleague from Bell Labs, Emina). The boys’ room was a Disaster, with a capital D.

IMG_4465

But I had neither the time nor energy to fix it, so I enlisted their help. Much to my surprise, it actually worked.

IMG_4469

Considering their room is about half the size of the room they used to have with much less closet space, I would say this qualifies as a miracle. I guess the offered reward of extra screen time can be very effective.

On a totally unrelated note, Bruce got his new business cards Friday. Not unexpectedly, Google[x] cards are pretty cool.

Aveson Camping 2014

The Outdoor Ed team at Aveson was planning the signups for the 2014 camping trip right as we were winding down our time at school, so I nudged my friend Kathy to see if we could crash the party and her answer was, thankfully, an enthusiastic yes. So, last weekend we packed up as much camping gear as we could find in our as yet unpacked garage and headed south 4+ hours to El Capitan State Beach. We set up camp here with the Bannings, Pintos, Bondsmiths and many other friends. Not too shabby!

Untitled

We had a great time of bike rides, beach trips, shared meals, s’mores and a wee bit of wine. Cari and I even got a walk in … just like old times.

Here’s Finn’s giant s’more the first night.

Untitled

Ezra is not so much interested in eating the marshmallows but he couldn’t wait to do “marshmallow sculptures” like he did last year. Here’s one of his best.

Untitled

He says, “They’re harder to make than you think.” I bet they are.

We also had several obligatory trips to the camp store for treats. I can’t believe I don’t have any pictures of all the chocolatey faces, but here’s one of Finn, pretty chocolatey, and getting ready to have a taste of Chapin’s snow cone.

Untitled

If there’s one thing that remains constant at El Capitan it’s the tar, and true to form the kids came back from the beach covered. I think Ruby got the worst of it; apparently, she (and Finn, I think) were making a nest. It took Rob about an hour and an entire bottle of Goo Gone to clean it all off.

Untitled

Somehow I escaped most of the tar clean up because Finn’s was handled by Reiner. I have no idea why but I wasn’t going to get in the way — I just took a picture and disappeared!

Untitled

On Sunday we spent a good amount of time at the tide pools.

Untitled

Untitled

Bren brought Charlie and Henry up for the day and those two and Finn ran around like crazy people for a while.

Untitled

Untitled

Ezra stayed busy building some rock formations.

Untitled

He and Chapin later worked together to make Big Rock Battle.

Untitled

The grownups found ways to entertain as well. Bruce, Rob and Ian formed a trio to make music with blades of grass.

Untitled

Untitled

Here’s their debut video.

After the concert and some kite flying, Bruce and our boys went to the other beach for more tar and sand. Finn had loaned his bike to Amelia and so he caught a ride from Bruce.

Untitled

After a few hours, they came back soaked, sandy and tired — all signs of a good day at the beach. Here’s Finn and Henry.

Untitled

Unfortunately, it was time for us to go as we had to be back at school and work the next morning. We had planned to leave about mid-day but really just couldn’t tear ourselves away. We finally got on the road about 5:00pm and pulled into the driveway a little after 10:00. We were all exhausted but our buckets were full from the much needed time with such great friends.

Here are a couple of pictures of me with two of said great friends, Cari and Kelly.

I have a few more photos here.

I’m just adding this because pictures of me are so rare and occasionally I like to have proof of my existence.

Untitled

There was also this one. Of course.

Ezra’s Sydney Opera House

Before he started building the Sydney Opera House, he made a contract.

image

It’s funny that he seemed to put so much pressure on himself to build this thing. We were consciously not adding any pressure, in part because we didn’t know how complicated it would be and if he would actually be able to do it.

Ezra, on the other hand, was quite confident. And it turned out he was right. Here he is after completing the first instruction book.

Untitled

And he continued to work. He didn’t have time to do it every day, but when there was time we knew we would find him in this spot.

Untitled

And on March 17th, he was all done!

Untitled

He really did do almost all of it by himself, too. Bruce helped him through two tough spots, and only once were there tears of frustration. Mostly, just joy.

Untitled

And a huge sense of accomplishment.

Ezra Turns 9

Ezra had one thought for his birthday this year: the Sydney Opera House. The LEGO version, that is. He talked about it from the moment he finished building the Chi Lion Temple he got for Christmas, as he was convinced that he could also conquer the Sydney Opera House even though it is clearly marked for ages 16 and above. His birthday list was short and to the point.

image

He threw in those plush toys so he and Finn could play together — the Creeper is for Finn.

We tried to keep the suspense going by adding lots of “IFs” when he would talk about building the opera house. And I think Bruce and I were both a little nervous that he wouldn’t be able to build it and would be upset. I also told him he’d have to wait until Bruce got home to open his presents, so you can imagine his excitement when Bruce walked in the door early that afternoon.

He started small, opening up my hastily wrapped gifts (one in a Google Shopping Express bag — where is the wrapping paper???).

Untitled

Both boys were happy.

Untitled

Next he started in on the always-popular box from the Becks.

Untitled

Lots of good stuff in there!

Untitled

And finally, on to the one he was waiting for.

Untitled

Untitled

After the gift extravaganza, Bruce went back to work and we went about our business for the evening. Ezra had a FaceTime birthday conversation with Ruby which was fun (and pretty funny to observe).

Untitled

And later we had cake. More specifically, we had ice cream cake from a local shop in walking distance to our new house. (That could prove to be dangerous.)

Untitled

All in all, for a birthday celebration three days after a major move, I think it was a good day!

Moving Day, Part II

March 1st brought our second move — from temporary housing in San Jose to a rental house in Palo Alto. As we drove out of San Jose that morning we saw this gorgeous full rainbow greeting us.

photo

We had patches of sprinkles with some clear skies mixed in that day.

Untitled

And at the end of it we had all of our belongings packed into a very tiny house and garage, causing me a bit of panic.

Untitled

But over the next couple of weeks we just kept trying to find a place for things (including a trip to Goodwill and giving away our big desks on Craigslist) and have gotten pretty well settled in (at least in the house). Bruce (and Finn) have built several pieces of IKEA furniture.

Untitled

And the boys now have bunk beds.

Untitled

The best part so far has been the cul-de-sac across the street which is great for bike riding and has another family with two boys about the same age.

Untitled

Big Basin Redwoods

On February 23rd we took the boys to Big Basin Redwoods State Park and spent a few hours hiking around and exploring. It’s hard to capture the scale of these giant trees.

Untitled

We even saw two banana slugs, much to all three Moision boys’ delight.

Eew …

And this pretty cool web in the middle of a stump.

Here’s a panoramic from our drive out.

The rest of my pictures are here.

Biking and Kite Flying

On a beautiful Saturday in February, we took advantage of our new surroundings and went for a family bike ride by the Bay near Google. The boys took to the dirt path while I stayed on the pavement.

Untitled

Untitled

Then we rode over to the kite flying area at Shoreline Park and the boys tried out their new kites. Finn’s took a little work to get it up in the air, but once there it just flew forever.

Untitled

Ezra had picked out a two-stringed kite which proved to be a challenge to fly at first. But soon he figured it out and was flying like a pro.

Untitled

Homeschooling / New School

We had about three and a half weeks between the time we left Pasadena and the time the boys started school in Palo Alto. We weren’t as diligent as we could have been about homeschooling, but we did get some work done most days. Well, not counting the field trip days or the days we spent running around town trying to figure out where to get TB tests. (Apparently TB is a big problem up here and both boys needed tests before they could start school.)

Anyway, we had some fun times with our homeschooling … mostly when Papa was around. One of the first projects was trying to see if they could make a sphere out of LEGO.

Untitled

I think they all tried their own designs and then looked up plans on the internet.

Untitled

There was also geode smashing.

Untitled

And they built a trebuchet.

Untitled

And even some Singapore Math.

Untitled

We also had recess.

Untitled

Untitled

I think we were all relieved when the first day of school rolled around.

Untitled

Both boys report liking having their own desks. Their teachers made great efforts to welcome them into their classrooms and they seem to be adjusting and enjoying their time at the new school. And they’re learning how to play tetherball.

Untitled

Tech Museum

Continuing our museum theme (and because the boys enjoyed homeschool field trips much more than actual homeschool), a couple of days later I took the boys to the Tech Museum in San Jose. The Detterichs had given us a membership there as a going away present and it was time to put it to use! Plus, they were having a Star Wars special exhibit that was about to end and we didn’t want to miss it.

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

After the Star Wars part, we went to the make-a-robot area and the boys had fun building.

Untitled

Untitled

I think they liked dressing it up more than using the moveable parts.

Untitled

Next up was make your own lightsaber where they learned about electric circuits.

Junior Museum & Zoo

The next week I took the boys to Palo Alto’s Junior Museum & Zoo, which has a hands on area which is a little bit like Kidspace. Most of the displays were fairly old and made of wood. Very charming — the boys played in there for quite a long time.

Outside is the little zoo with bunnies, birds, ferrets, snakes, raccoons and more.

Exploratorium

Bruce had the first week after the move off and we tried to mix in a few fun things while we handled the mundane (namely, the rental property tour day … ugh). Our most fun day was spent at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. The boys had a blast.

This spinning disk thing was a hit with all of us.

Untitled

The boys also really liked the fog tornado.

Untitled

Untitled

I didn’t take very many pictures, but the rest of them are here. It was a really fun experience and we will definitely go back!

More Lost Teeth

Finn lost two teeth while we were in transition but of course that didn’t stop the Tooth Fairy, or Tootho and Mootho from visiting. The first tooth came out just before the move so the house had a few boxes lying around. Here’s the Tooth Fairy’s letter.

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

The second tooth came out while we were in temporary housing, so it was a big mystery to see if the Tooth Fairy would be able to find us. She did.

Untitled

Untitled

There was some hullabaloo which I can’t quite remember about Tootho and Mootho coming for a battle. Ezra left some toys out for them.

Untitled

They battled and left notes for Ezra and Finn. (They aren’t great spellers.)
