Thanksgiving in Santa Barbara

Thanksgiving this year had a new venue: We rented a house in Santa Barbara with the SoCal Moisions for several days of good food, fun times and lots of Nerf gun battles. The house was in the hills so one of the first things we did was explore the surrounding area, which included some ruins of a house that must have burned down a long time ago. Here are the cousins. Thomas was obviously well-prepared for the aforementioned battle.

Untitled

Untitled

As usual, I have no pictures from Thanksgiving dinner, save for this one shot of Bob’s computer analysis of the turkey cooking time, which I found pretty entertaining (and informative!).

Untitled

Some day I will get my act together and remember to get some shots of people. We had David and Beth with us, and we all devoured lots of great food.

The next day we got out for a bike ride along the coast.

Untitled

The kids were happy to ride for a while, but really, at least my two, just wanted to play in the sand.

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

Saturday we took another bike ride, this time at Ellwood Mesa.

Untitled

Untitled

Another ridiculously beautiful day.

Untitled

Oddly enough, the kids talked us in to going down to the beach again.

Untitled

Untitled

Bruce and I tried to take a selfie and got photobombed by this guy digging in the background.

Untitled

After the beach time and the ride back, we got some great Mexican food at a place Beth recommended. Ah, good Mexican food, how we’ve missed you.

Next up was a park, also recommended by Beth, with a giant play structure and a creepy clown show. Much to my surprise, Ezra and Thomas (in the blue helmet) joined in.

Untitled

On Sunday we packed up and headed home, just as the much-needed rain hit California. It was a long and sometimes painfully slow drive back but well worth it!

Monterey with the Bannings

The weekend before Thanksgiving the Bannings came up to visit Monterey and we got to join them for a day and a half. Not knowing about their upcoming visit (which had been in some limbo so I hadn’t mentioned it) about a week earlier, Ezra had asked me when we were going to get to see our old friends. “Like who?” I asked. “You know, Ruby, Chapin, Jack …” Well, two out of three ain’t bad!

We arrived in the afternoon and after quickly ditching our stuff at the hotel, we took off in search of Dennis the Menace Park. The kids had a grand old time running around while we got to catch up a bit with Cari and Rob. Later, while walking to find a restaurant for dinner, the kids found another park so we stopped for some more play.

Untitled

Once we found a restaurant that looked good, they informed us that they could only accommodate a group of our size with two adjacent tables. Kids table!

Untitled

The next morning Cari and I got out for a fairly early walk. It was beautiful. And fun to talk in person instead of on the phone!

Untitled

A couple of hours later we walked over to the Aquarium, the day’s main activity. I snapped this shot while Cari was valiantly trying to get a shot of all the kids in the bright sunlight.

Untitled

Up to that point, this had been our main photographic view.

Untitled

After some minor delays for exploration …

Untitled

… we made it to the Aquarium.

Untitled

This room with its wall of glass that a wave tumbles over was a huge hit.

Untitled

Untitled

After a nice long visit at the Aquarium, we headed out on our walk back. More shots of the kids’ backs.

Untitled

And one of Ezra walking. I just thought he looked super cute.

Untitled

We had another nice dinner before we hit the road since Bruce had to work the next day and the kids had school. I never thought I’d miss Aveson’s full week off for Thanksgiving week, but I do!

Labor Day Yosemite Trip

We spent Labor Day weekend with the SoCal Moisions at Yosemite (thanks to Vanessa for grabbing the reservations!). It was, surprisingly, our first trip there. We were stunned by both the beauty and the crowds. Gah! The crowds!

But let’s stick with the beauty.

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

It’s impossible to even capture the scale of it. Needless to say, we had a great time. So nice to see family!

We did some bike riding.

And, hey look! Here are the adults!

Uncle Bob made a pineapple upside down cake.

Camping with the SoCal Moisions is good for many reasons … including the food which is always much more elaborate than anything we do!

Great trip! More pictures here.

San Francisco in August

We took a weekend staycation in San Francisco in August with the intent of getting to know the city a little better. While I was unprepared for how cold it was, the scenery sure was lovely! Here’s one view from our hotel the day we arrived.

Untitled

And here’s the same shot the next morning … a little foggy!

Untitled

Here are some images of our exploration.

One of the highlights was a boat tour which took us under the Golden Gate and over around Alcatraz. It was a freezing but very informative, touristy thing to do.

SF-Tour

We also spent a good amount of time at the penny arcade and took a set of photo booth pictures.

SF-Photobooth

On Sunday morning we met up with the Stevenson/Saveri clan who happened to be visiting as well. We got to see Elizabeth’s childhood home and neighborhood and had a delicious breakfast close by.

Untitled

Then we let the kids run around outside the Palace of Fine Arts building which is right across the street from Elizabeth’s house — not a bad place to grow up!

Untitled

Obviously, these four hooligans take picture-taking very seriously.

There were some great trees to climb, too.

Untitled

Ezra would have stayed here all day …

Untitled

… but alas, it was soon time to stay goodbye to friends and head back home.

Laguna in July

With the busy-ness of the new school year, the summer feels like a distant memory, but way back in July the boys and I spent a peaceful, warm week with the Bannings in Laguna. There is something so relaxing about this spot (even with the stress of Ezra looking like he’s going to fall over the side of the deck).

Untitled

Ezra was definitely in his happy place all week — with Chester.

Untitled

Untitled

Of course, we spent lots of time at the beach with the kids digging, running and jumping in waves until complete exhaustion set in.

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

We had Jack, Theo and Olivia (and their moms) join us for a playful day. Jack buried Ezra.

Untitled

And Finn spent a little time with the ladies …

Untitled

There was also some LEGO involved.

Untitled

During the week we also did some kayaking, biking, roller blading, a little school on the deck …

Untitled

… and lots of ice cream eating.

Untitled

Bruce joined us at the end of the week and we were able to spend Saturday afternoon with the Bondsmiths and take part in a little celebration for Jenner’s birthday.

Untitled

It was a great week of time spent with such good friends. We are grateful to the Bannings for their generosity!

I have more photos and a few videos here.

Napa with the Girls

At the end of June some of my buddies (Jerri, Gina, Laura and Cindy) came up for a wine tasting weekend. Jerri and Gina were also running a half marathon, but I’m going to ignore that fact lest I feel like a total schlub.

I don’t have many pictures, but we visited three wineries on the first day (Friday). This shot is from the second winery — Jerri needed to do a little spooning with this sculpture.

Untitled

On Saturday, Jerri and Gina got up early for their race. While they were gone, I went for a nice walk. Good scenery.

Untitled

Untitled

After the race and cleanup, we headed out for another round of wineries. Jerri demanded a castle … and found one.

Untitled

Untitled

The wine here was just OK, but the Guido-like pourer was worth it. I think Jerri took this picture at the castle, but I have no idea what we were doing. Maybe the wine was good after all.

Napa1

Our last winery was one that did sparkling wines. Here were our in our very comfortable setup.

Napa2

The glasses all together were lovely …

Untitled

… and the wine was delicious but I had hit my limit by then. Lucky for Cindy — the beneficiary of my share.

The next day we were winery-ed out and decided to drive to San Jose to see the Winchester Mystery House, which was interesting and weird.

Thanks for coming up, ladies!

Surprise, Pasadena!

On a happier note than my last post, our trip to Pasadena in the beginning of June super fun. It did our hearts good to see many of the friends we miss so much. We chose that weekend because Friday evening was woodworking class, a gathering of many of our favorite people. Plus, I wanted to see Cari’s reaction when we just showed up at her house. I know I would lose my marbles if she just showed up at my house; turns out she pretty much did the same. (Shout out to Rob for keeping the secret so well!)

It was a full house and I paid almost no attention whatsoever to the very involved project Rob had clearly put a lot of thought and time into.

Untitled

Untitled

I was too busy being a chatty distraction and taking pictures.

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

I was happy to see that Allen has taken up the job of woodworking documentarian.

Untitled

The kids also spent some time goofing around.

Untitled

Ezra and Jack made one project together instead of two, and they signed it.

Untitled

The next day we went to Descanso Gardens with the Bannings. I think this picture kind of sums up everyone’s personality right now.

Untitled

After Descanso, my family and I parted ways for the afternoon so I have no pictures of their activities. They went to the Heffernans for the afternoon, and the boys stayed for a sleepover (their first). Jerri sent me a few pictures.

I, on the other hand, spent the afternoon visiting Roseanne for a much needed haircut and color. Once that was done, Sherry and I went to the Kings game! Stanley Cup Finals, Game 2!!!

Untitled

Untitled

The Kings beat the Rangers 5-4 in double overtime. Best. Game. Ever.

Untitled

The next morning we picked up a couple of happy and tired boys and headed to Hamilton Park for an impromptu get together. We were pleased and touched that so many friends were able to stop by and visit for a bit.

And then we headed to lunch at El Patron, where we ran into realtor extraordinaire Lisa Ashworth! After a hearty lunch, we hopped in the car and headed back to Nor Cal.

Big Basin Tent Cabins

In May we camped a couple of nights in a tent cabin at Big Basin Redwoods State Park. We’d never tried tent cabins before, and although our cots are more comfortable than the “beds” provided in the tent cabin, it was nice to not have to set up our tent. Here’s our home away from home for the weekend. The setting was beautiful.

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

It was a little chilly, so we had a fire. Of course, we would have had a fire anyway, since building it is the boys’ favorite part of camping.

Untitled

They tried their hand at whittling and really enjoyed it.

Untitled

Untitled

We all slept OK that first night, and we had some smiling faces at breakfast.

Untitled

Pretty soon we set off on a nice hike.

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

Ezra likes the banana slugs.

Untitled

After a rest, a little bike riding and some fun with the dry ice we’d brought along …

Untitled

Untitled

… we headed back out for a shorter hike. At some point we came to a small bridge with this note carved into it.

Untitled

Obviously, my head almost exploded because of all the errors. The kids didn’t care; they just wanted to throw things into the water below.

Untitled

Here are more shots from the hike.

Back at camp, marshmallow roasting capped off the evening.

Untitled

In the morning the boys got the wood stove working in the cabin. Just because.

Untitled

And then we headed home. We had missed Game 7 of the Kings v. Ducks playoff series that weekend and were out of service range the whole time. As we headed back to civilization, I was very happy to receive several text messages with the good news that the Kings had trounced the Ducks (6-2) and moved on to the next round!

Michelle & Michael’s Wedding

We took a little trip to Palm Springs last weekend for Bruce’s step-sister Michelle’s wedding. We flew out of SFO for the first time. I’m always taken aback by the boys’ enthusiasm for airports: “Mommy, look! There are planes here!”

Untitled

They also had this very cool Japanese toy exhibit. My favorite was the robots.

Untitled

We had a great time swimming and playing with all the cousins. I was too busy chatting and watching the kids in the pool to take pictures unfortunately. But I have some from the wedding. Here’s the bride and groom.

And the whole Moision/Oklejas/Beck crew.

And here’s our photo booth output.

Aveson Camping 2014

The Outdoor Ed team at Aveson was planning the signups for the 2014 camping trip right as we were winding down our time at school, so I nudged my friend Kathy to see if we could crash the party and her answer was, thankfully, an enthusiastic yes. So, last weekend we packed up as much camping gear as we could find in our as yet unpacked garage and headed south 4+ hours to El Capitan State Beach. We set up camp here with the Bannings, Pintos, Bondsmiths and many other friends. Not too shabby!

Untitled

We had a great time of bike rides, beach trips, shared meals, s’mores and a wee bit of wine. Cari and I even got a walk in … just like old times.

Here’s Finn’s giant s’more the first night.

Untitled

Ezra is not so much interested in eating the marshmallows but he couldn’t wait to do “marshmallow sculptures” like he did last year. Here’s one of his best.

Untitled

He says, “They’re harder to make than you think.” I bet they are.

We also had several obligatory trips to the camp store for treats. I can’t believe I don’t have any pictures of all the chocolatey faces, but here’s one of Finn, pretty chocolatey, and getting ready to have a taste of Chapin’s snow cone.

Untitled

If there’s one thing that remains constant at El Capitan it’s the tar, and true to form the kids came back from the beach covered. I think Ruby got the worst of it; apparently, she (and Finn, I think) were making a nest. It took Rob about an hour and an entire bottle of Goo Gone to clean it all off.

Untitled

Somehow I escaped most of the tar clean up because Finn’s was handled by Reiner. I have no idea why but I wasn’t going to get in the way — I just took a picture and disappeared!

Untitled

On Sunday we spent a good amount of time at the tide pools.

Untitled

Untitled

Bren brought Charlie and Henry up for the day and those two and Finn ran around like crazy people for a while.

Untitled

Untitled

Ezra stayed busy building some rock formations.

Untitled

He and Chapin later worked together to make Big Rock Battle.

Untitled

The grownups found ways to entertain as well. Bruce, Rob and Ian formed a trio to make music with blades of grass.

Untitled

Untitled

Here’s their debut video.

After the concert and some kite flying, Bruce and our boys went to the other beach for more tar and sand. Finn had loaned his bike to Amelia and so he caught a ride from Bruce.

Untitled

After a few hours, they came back soaked, sandy and tired — all signs of a good day at the beach. Here’s Finn and Henry.

Untitled

Unfortunately, it was time for us to go as we had to be back at school and work the next morning. We had planned to leave about mid-day but really just couldn’t tear ourselves away. We finally got on the road about 5:00pm and pulled into the driveway a little after 10:00. We were all exhausted but our buckets were full from the much needed time with such great friends.

Here are a couple of pictures of me with two of said great friends, Cari and Kelly.

I have a few more photos here.

Palm Springs in January

The boys and I started off the New Year with a brief trip to Jamma’s on January 2nd. We enjoyed the warm weather and clear skies, and of course, Jamma’s company. The boys mostly wanted to be in the pool.

Untitled

I liked their different techniques for jumping in the pool — so indicative of their personalities.

Untitled

Here’s a short video of how they spent much of their time at the pool.

More pictures here.

Day 5 at Chaa Creek

Day 5 was really just the morning since we had to leave for the two hour drive to the airport pretty early. Ezra and Finn got in their last snuggle time with Jamma.

Untitled

And we tried to take a family photo.

Untitled

Finn was uncooperative. Ezra, on the other hand, was happy to oblige.

Untitled

We had our last meal at the restaurant. The boys knew they would miss the special hot chocolate they got every morning. We were truly spoiled at Chaa Creek.

Untitled

There are more pictures here and here.

Day 4 at Chaa Creek

On Day 4 we took a trip to Xunantanich to see the Mayan ruins. Bruce, Ezra and I had been there before, but it was new to Finn and Jamma. Because we were already so close, it was super easy and fast to get there this time. After a short ride (with our trusty guide Ricky in our trusty Chaa Creek van), we arrived at the new and improved but still hand-cranked ferry.

The ferry to Lamanai

We crossed the river …

… and were soon on our way to the site.

Untitled

El Castillo is tall, but the route to the top is stable and not too hard.

Untitled

We all made it to the top. Here are some pictures along the way and views from the top.

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

I leaned over the edge for this one — or rather, stuck my arm out over the edge.

Untitled

I don’t know what’s going on here, but this shot cracked me up.

Untitled

We also got to see a bunch of howler monkeys in the trees.

Untitled

Untitled

And then our otherwise reasonable guide gave us some hoo-ha about the Mayans choosing their locations because of the energy, and tried to get us all to feel the energy through this stick. You can guess who was skeptical.

Untitled

Untitled

And who wasn’t.

Untitled

And then Bruce got crowned the new King of the Mayans.

Untitled

After heading back to the lodge and having a great lunch, we decided to take our complimentary horseback ride. Jamma, smartly, sat this one out.

Untitled

I don’t have many pictures because it’s hard to hold a camera steady and ride a horse at the same time. But we took a long ride around the grounds — here are a few samples of the terrain. The boys are up front next to the guide and Bruce and I were the last two after a couple from Burbank on their honeymoon.

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

At what turned out to be the half-way point, the skies opened up and we got caught in a torrential downpour. We were soaked to the bone and had an interesting ride back on slippery slopes. But we survived and had a good laugh when it was over. And some Advil.

Day 3 at Chaa Creek

On Day 3 we decided to go on a canoeing expedition to Barton Creek Cave, a Mayan ceremonial cave. We headed out fairly early with our Chaa Creek guide, Ricky. We took perhaps the bumpiest dirt road on the planet for what seemed like a very long time. Somehow, Finn managed to fall asleep.

Sleepy Finn

Our destination was well worth the kidney-jarring ride. Even before we got to the actual cave, the surrounding area was lush and beautiful.

Lovely setting

Here’s our ride, one of the trusty Chaa Creek vans.

Our van

We geared up — head lamps, life vests, paddles — and headed to the canoes.

Finn's ready

The boys wanted to ride with Bruce (surprise) so I went with Ricky and got to take all kinds of pictures from the front of the canoe.

Boys in a canoe

Boys (and Ricky)

Sadly, my photos from inside the cave don’t do it justice. The stalactite and stalagmite formations were amazing.

Caves

In the caves

There were lots of bats and a couple of skulls and Mayan artifacts. At one point, we turned off all our lights and experienced the total darkness, which was really eerie. And then we turned around and headed back out.

Out!

The boys’ highlight came next — a rope swing over the river which they played on for at least an hour. Ezra had it down to a science.

Finn … not so much at first.

But he got better the more he tried.

Bruce got into the act, too. But the water was so shallow that he kept hitting his bum.

I think we did something else that afternoon, but I can’t remember what it was. I know Jamma came that day, and we probably went to the pool. This is what happens when I wait nearly two months to do a blog post.

Day 2 at Chaa Creek

On Day 2 we took advantage of some of the activities available at Chaa Creek — namely the canoes.

Say "canoooooooo"

There are basically two options: arrange for someone from the lodge to pick us up in town after we paddle down river or paddle up river and then back down to the lodge. We chose the second option because we just wanted to explore a bit. The scenery was beautiful.

Scenery from the canoe

Bruce did a lot of paddling.

On the river

So did I.

Finn's photography

We ran into several areas of “rapids” which I put in quotes because they looked harmless. But wow, were they difficult to pass! After a while we got tired of fighting them and turned around for home. I think next time I’d take option a.

After canoeing, we hit the lounge where the boys played a little chess.

In the lounge

I checked out the makeshift (and unofficial) Little Free Library book exchange and I think Bruce checked in with work. Later we went out on another trail for some further exploring.

Boys head out

We saw lots of these big guys around.

Iguana

In the afternoon we went up to the Blue Morpho butterfly preserve they have there and got a tour of the area where they breed and study them.

Ezra tried his hand at catching some.

But our guide was an expert at it.

We also hit the pool that afternoon. I don’t have any pictures but they have a beautiful infinity pool that we took full advantage of!

That evening we had another lovely dinner here.

The boys were mesmerized because the staff was setting up for a private dinner for two over by the pool.

Not too long later, boys were fast asleep in their loft.
