Finn
Little Woodworker
Finn has been very interested of late in anything that Bruce is doing in the garage. And, he always wants a project of his own.
On Friday, Bruce mentioned to him that he’d been thinking about making him a workbench all his own with his tools and everything. Needless to say, Finn was quite enthusiastic about the idea and wouldn’t really let it go until Bruce followed through. So, voila.
Secret Meeting
Last Wednesday while I was chatting with Teacher Angie at Cottage pickup, Finn called a secret meeting with Teacher Sahar. They hunkered down on the pillows in the reading area.
Sahar later told me that Finn said his secret was that he wants her to buy him a double lightsaber for his birthday. And, he told her that she had to say that her secret was that she loves him. (I think she really does. And the feeling is definitely mutual.)
Hockey Finn
We’ve been clearing out the guest room, which had doubled as a storage locker for all the kitchen stuff (and was generally just a repository for a bunch of other stuff we hadn’t put away). Among the things that needed to go down to the basement was Bruce’s old bag of hockey equipment. Finn saw the helmet and couldn’t resist.
The crazy thing is, it’s not that much too big for him.
Fire Truck Visit at Cottage
I was at Cottage a little longer than usual this morning because I had a parent-teacher conference with Finn’s beloved Teacher Sahar until about 9:30. Good luck for me since it turned out it was fire truck day!
The kids loved seeing the firemen and, of course, their giant truck. They had one of the firemen put on the fire-fighting gear and then encouraged the kids to come closer for a better look.
At one point, the guy’s alarm went off — a safety mechanism I didn’t know about that alerts fellow fire fighters when one of them hasn’t moved in some amount of time.
It was kind of a loud alarm.
Finn spoke up during the question and answer period. The fireman had said earlier that in the event of the fire it’s best to be on the floor but not go under the bed. Finn pointed out that in an earthquake you are supposed to go under the bed — “Do you know …?” The fireman was impressed by his brilliance (“that’s a smart boy!”) and Sahar and I wanted to go squeeze him. But we didn’t.
Bruce’s Morning at Cottage
While Ezra and I were at Aveson, Bruce and Finn were at Cottage for one of our scheduled parent-teacher days. I knew it was going to be a good day because the kids love having Bruce in the classroom. Jerri concurred via text after dropping off Charlie: “Dads are so much more fun.”
Apparently, there was lots of fun with string — a spider web, a zip line for the toy animals. And there was face painting; Finn got painted like Han Solo in warrier paint and Finn painted Bruce as Chewbacca. (He’s on quite the Star Wars kick right now.)
My friend Jen also sent me this very sweet picture of her son Kai with Bruce and Finn at music time.
Dads really are more fun.
Helping Out
After two rained-out days, Finn was thrilled that the landscapers were back today. He’s been outside every second they’ve been here, except for the half-hour I forced him to come inside so they could have their lunch break.
They’re putting down mulch in the front yard and for a while he was just following them around, chatting away. But then he decided to get out his Batman bucket and help. They moved a small pile of mulch onto the end of the truck where he can reach it and he makes trips back and forth. He should be done in no time.
Finn and the Landscapers
Finn’s new favorite pastime is hanging out with Victor and his team of landscapers. If we’re at home, he wants to be out there with the guys. And if we have to leave, he’s always very concerned about what time we’ll be back to make sure he’ll get to see the guys before they leave for the day. I keep telling Victor to shoo him away if he’s bothering them, but he never does and it even looks like he enjoys having Finn around to “help” and chat.
After school on Friday, I made Finn a snack and before I knew it he was outside eating, chatting and watching Victor work on the dry stream bed.
Then he decided he wanted to dig, so he gave us a long monologue about which shovel he needed, ended up bringing out two, and got to work.
Yesterday, the boys decided they’d like a mud pit (probably spurred on by the muddy areas the workers had created to make the trench-digging easier). Bruce and I didn’t want the boys to be in the way so we asked Victor where would be a good place. Victor then added some dirt to build up a dam in part of the dry stream bed and made the mud pit for them.
They were in heaven.
Our Day at Cottage
I was parent-teacher in Finn’s class today for the first time in a long time (Bruce has taken the last two shifts) so I took the opportunity to take some pictures. Being the first day back after the long Thanksgiving weekend, it was a high-energy, big emotion day. We had lots of fun and, as usual, I’m completely worn out. Here’s some of what we did.
We brought a box of Bernie’s old woodworking stuff (wheels and decorative items) for the kids to use in their creations. They really enjoyed it!
We played in the sand.
Here’s our little sandcastle with Finn’s treasure poked in the top.
During group time with Teacher Sahar (with whom Finn is head-over-heels in love), we built with little marshmallows and toothpicks.
And we had story time.
Here are Finn’s creations of the day.
Little Finn
Finn was showing off his ninja moves this weekend. Here’s the video he asked me to take.
And here he is, all geared-up, after taking a spill on his bike. Since he fell on his knee, he requested that we find Ezra’s knee pads so he could use them. And then he put on the safety goggles for good measure.
He also had a cute moment in the front yard with the palm tree. He was “climbing” it and when I told him that I needed him and Ezra to come inside, he said, “It’s OK, Mommy, I’ll keep an eye on Ezra.” What a responsible little chap.
A Father-Son Moment, 4-year-old Style
Last night I had a Board meeting so Bruce was on bedtime duty. At some point in the evening, Finn was in the bathroom and wanted Bruce to come in and “chat.” “Let’s talk about penises, Papa,” he said.
Finn has noticed recently that his looks a little different than his circumcised pals. (It’s interesting to me that Ezra has yet to make the same observation; I imagine he hasn’t noticed.)
Anyway, there was apparently a lot of chatting going on, but this part is my favorite:
Bruce: When they cut off the tip of your penis, it’s called a circumcision.
Finn: That’s too hard for me to say… I’m going to call it, “Cut off piece of penis.”
