Finn’s California Passport Project

This year, it’s Finn’s turn to do the fourth grade California Passport project. He chose to do it on Jamma, which meant he could do most of it on his own. He took great initiative contacting her with questions and putting it all together. I helped with photos and proofreading, and Bruce helped with the visual aids for his class presentation. Here’s a slideshow of the passport booklet.

And here he is meeting with the “governor of California” (his wonderful teacher, Mrs. Johnson) before his presentation.

Here’s the video of his speech.

And the speech written out.

Lastly, here’s his grade report. Well done, Finn!

Fall Walk & Roll Day 2016

Last month’s Walk & Roll Day was the first one I’d done since becoming the only Safe Routes to School rep at Fairmeadow (instead of one of three reps). I wanted to do a bang-up job of getting the word out, so I made new posters and Bruce helped me hang them by the car line.

IMG_0025

I also posted flyers all over school, sent home a small flyer in the Friday folders, and put the announcement in the weekly newsletter. OK, maybe overkill.

The Friday before the event, there was an all-school assembly. When Finn and I arrived at school, the Principal asked him if he would participate in the assembly to talk about Walk & Roll Day. He was game, and I have to say he did a great job, especially considering he didn’t know about it until just before it happened! Here’s a still shot of him talking with Principal Althouse.

IMG_0042

And of course I recorded his whole part. He said he was super nervous, but I don’t think it shows.

As for Walk & Roll Day itself, it was a great success. I wasn’t even sure I was going to make it because I’d been fighting a bout of vertigo for two days beforehand. I had made arrangements for stand-ins just in case, but luckily with a lot of help from Bruce that morning, I was able to do my job that day. I only have a few pictures because I was super busy greeting students and handing out raffle tickets. Here’s one of Finn, who was manning one of the entrances.

IMG_0088

And here’s our main entrance before the main crush of students arrived.

IMG_0090

We had a ton of participation in active transportation that day and almost no solo car trips, as evidenced by our sticker charts.

IMG_0093

Our normally busy car line was almost empty. I’ll take that as a success!

Bring Your Child to X Day

This post is quite chronologically-challenged, but all the way back at the beginning of May, while Ezra and I were on a field trip to NASA, Finn and Bruce participated in Bring Your Child to X Day.

IMG_4747

IMG_4748

In addition to Bruce’s duties as a dad that day, he also had an important role as an employee — he devised a fun way to demonstrate how the laser communication system on the balloons works. He wired a switch to a laser pointer and fastened it to a helmet, taped on a small motor to cause vibration, and attached a giant balloon to it. Then he had the kids try to point the laser pointer at a fixed spot across the room, while the balloon swayed above their heads and the motor vibrated the helmet. All this simulated what the laser comm system has to deal with in trying to point to another balloon in order for successful communication. It’s really quite difficult to keep the laser pointer straight on target with all this going on, but the kids (and adults!) had a super fun time trying. Here are a few pictures taken by his colleague, Paul.

Here’s Baris giving it a try. I love this picture. Everyone’s faces are expressive, and I especially love Finn peaking out between Bruce and Baris.

The demonstration proved to be so successful that the project is planning to use it for other Xers and visitors. What a great outcome for one of Bruce’s crazy contraptions!

Finn’s Piano Recital

Finn started piano lessons this year, and on June 11th he had his first recital. Here he is before we left for the music school — hair combed and wearing long sleeves and long pants!

IMG_4868

Here’s the program with the songs he played.

IMG_4872

I took a video of his performance, of course. It’s a little hard to see his face behind all that hair but he did great!

And here’s a shot of all of the students with the teacher.

Angel Island Field Trip

Last month I chaperoned Finn’s last field trip of the year — to Angel Island, just north of San Francisco. All of the kids and most of the chaperones made the 90 minute plus trip on school buses. The overflow chaperones (me included) went together, which I thought would be better, but turned out to be a little too Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride for my liking. At any rate, we all made it, if somewhat worse for wear.

First up was the ferry across the bay to the island. I was paired with another mom and these were our charges: Finn, Atticus, Sasha, and Ethan.

IMG_4715

Here’s another one of Finn on the ferry. It was very bright and windy!

IMG_4717

The day’s plan was to hike to the top of the mountain, have lunch, hike back down, and play at the beach for a while. Here are Finn and Atticus consulting the map.

IMG_4719

The first part of the hike was pretty steep and strenuous and there were lots of complaints from the kids. But then the trail settles into a fairly easy, meandering route and most of the kids did pretty well. Finn and his friend Eli took turns taking pictures with Eli’s camera.

IMG_4723

It was a lovely hike with great views.

IMG_4725

IMG_4729

I took this one from the top after we had lunch.

IMG_4733

And here’s our whole unruly bunch.

IMG_4739

And my selfie with Finn.

IMG_4741

Soon we were off, taking a different trail back down.

IMG_4742

IMG_4743

After the hike we had a lot of time at the beach. Too much time, if you ask me (or any other chaperone). Finn didn’t go in the water, which was understandable because it was freezing! Despite unpleasant rides home for both of us and lots of traffic, we eventually made it at about 6:00 pm. Long day!

The next day Finn brought home thank you notes that he and Atticus wrote. I loved his.

IMG_4755

I loved how we talked and hiked, too, my sweet boy.

Finn’s 9th Birthday

Poor Finn’s birthday came in the middle of escrow craziness, so we have yet to schedule a birthday party for him. However, we did have a family celebration, of course, and I think he had a pretty nice day.

He got some presents.

IMG_4470

IMG_4472

On the way to dinner — at Five Guys, his pick — I snapped this picture of the brothers.

Baylands Field Trip with Finn

Last week Finn and I visited the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge (now that’s a mouthful) across the Dumbarton Bridge in Fremont. It’s a doozy of a trip with some parents leading activities for the students and other parents chaperoning. I reluctantly agreed to be a station leader when they were short on volunteers, even though it was terrible timing for us since we were leaving on a camping trip the next morning. We were all a little worried about the weather and the projected rain, but the day turned out to be mostly dry, if a little chilly.

I paired up with another mom to teach the kids about salt pond migration and the necessity of the local habitat to the migratory bird population. There was a script to read and a game to play; some groups were more interested than others. Here are a couple of shots from our station.

IMG_4244

IMG_4245

I have very few pictures, but I snapped a couple when Finn’s group came through.

IMG_4247

IMG_4250

And here’s one I took at the end of the day when the rain clouds really started rolling in.

IMG_4258

It took what seemed like forever to orchestrate this class picture.

IMG_4255

The rain came just as we were hiking back up to the cars. It was a good day but totally exhausting!

Flag Football Tournament

While Finn’s flag football team didn’t win a lot of games, the season was a total success in my book. Finn loved playing and his coach stressed sportsmanship and learning the game over winning, which I wholeheartedly agree with. The final weekend of play was a tournament, and the boys played pretty well. Here are a couple of photos of Finn’s stint as quarterback.

IMG_6248

IMG_6250

After the game, the coach gave a little pep talk and the players received trophies.

IMG_6286

IMG_6295

IMG_6310

I’m guessing he’ll want to play again next year.

Finn’s Buddy Assembly 2016

This year, Finn’s third grade class is buddies with a first grade class. They had their Buddy Assembly last week; the theme was Character Matters. They wore costumes and sang a few songs about the Golden Rule, and were generally just adorable. Finn is in the back row on the left in floppy mouse ears.

IMG_4063

I don’t have many pictures because I was way in the back of the room. After the performance was over and the auditorium cleared out, they did a reprise of their golden rule song for the parents so I got video.

Flag Football

Finn’s new venture is flag football and his first games were this past weekend. It’s a pretty laid back league — they had practices on the two previous Sundays and from here on out they play two short games every Sunday. Except Super Bowl Sunday, of course. He had a great time last weekend; they lost the first game but bounced back to win the second. Here are some action shots.

Winter Lodge Field Trip

On December 16th I helped chaperone Finn and the rest of the Fairmeadow third graders on their ice skating field trip to the Winter Lodge in Palo Alto. I’d never been there before, and I haven’t ice skated in ages. I wasn’t really planning to skate, but when your 8-year-old asks you to skate with him, you do it. Despite wobbly ankles and not-so-great rental skates, it was a super fun time! Here are some photos.

Third Grade Bike Rodeo

I volunteered to help with this year’s Third Grade Bike Rodeo in October and had a blast. Palo Alto has been doing these in every elementary school for 20 years or so, and they have a well-oiled system. The day before, we set up several stations on the playground at school, each set to teach the kids about a particular area of bike safety. We had lots of volunteers, District reps, and a police officer helping on the day of the rodeo. It was so great to see all the bikes lined up and ready.

IMG_3229

My job at my station was to ride along the blue-taped bike path, scan for cars over my shoulder, and then signal and make a left turn when it was safe.

IMG_3232

Here’s Finn learning hand signals at another station.

IMG_3240

And here’s his group at my station, getting the pre-ride instructions.

IMG_3243

I thought the day was wildly successful, both in terms of teaching the kids about safety and inspiring them to ride their bikes more. In the days following, I got lots of positive feedback from parents, and our Walk & Roll to School Day (which was the day after the Bike Rodeo) showed a big uptick in kids who biked to school.

Levi’s Stadium Field Trip

Finn’s first field trip of third grade was to check out the new Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers. I volunteered to go, because I almost always volunteer to go on field trips. I didn’t realize it was such a hot commodity (the teacher did a lottery to chose the two chaperones); if I had, I would have bowed out and let a real football fan take my place. Anyway, we were taken on fancy buses about 20 minutes south to Santa Clara and arrived to find a team of stadium employees set to show us around. Here are some pictures of Finn and friends, and their opening pass-the-football activity.

IMG_3058

IMG_3060

IMG_3062

Our group was assigned to take a tour of the stadium first. Our guide talked a lot about football and the upcoming Super Bowl, which I found endlessly entertaining as a high percentage of the kids are not American and are blissfully ignorant about American football. She also made some attempt to talk about the geometry of design in the stadium, but really it was dawning on me that this field trip was pure 49er propaganda. The stadium is lovely though; here are a few pictures.

IMG_3070

IMG_3071

IMG_3074

A couple of the kids got to try on some football equipment.

IMG_3085

IMG_3089

Then we went for a lunch break. Finn liked the charging station.

IMG_3093

After lunch we went to the “educational” portion of the field trip. They talked about lift and force with respect to throwing a football, and then the kids broke into groups and got to try out throwing, kicking, and handing off footballs. It was fun — I got to catch the footballs.

IMG_3102

IMG_3103

They also had these screens up with different aspects of football. I don’t remember what they all were, but the biggest hit had the kids trying to follow along with a cheerleading routine.

IMG_3106

Here’s a short video. All girls and one brave boy.

Then they gathered in the big helmet for a class photo.

IMG_3112

The last bit of time was spent in the 49er museum. Again, this would have been really great for an actual fan.

IMG_3113

IMG_3117

It’s a good thing I don’t mind the boys getting a free day away from school, because this was a nonsense field trip. The only purpose I could see was to try to recruit new 49er fans!

Avalanche Soccer

A few months ago Finn joined the Stanford Soccer Club U9 division and was placed with the other newbies on the Avalanche team. (The club isn’t associated with Stanford University, by the way.) When we signed up I had been told this was a noncompetitive development team. Unfortunately, there was so little interest from other families in a noncompetitive club that they rolled Finn into the competitive side of things. Big surprise.

Eventually we got used to the idea and decided to let him play despite our weekly wincing at the “cheering” from the sidelines of his games. Our team is fairly mellow as it turns out, but we played some other teams with lots of yellers.

The season ended last weekend and he wanted to sign up to play again in the Fall. Oy. Here are some pictures from this season.
