Cottage Special Visitor’s Day 2011

We have a guest blogger for today’s entry: Jamma!

4-19-11 Special Visitor’s Day at Cottage

There are no pictures with this posting because Jamma never has her camera and if she does, it is never charged. Bad Jamma.

Other than that, excellent day at Cottage. Finn was excited to see me, barefoot, dirty and wet to his knees. He did decide that taking me inside was better than making sand “cement.” Jamma needs overalls for Cottage visits. Inside we went where Finn made me a beautiful lavender bouquet with a red and green ribbon. It made my car smell so nice all the way home. Next was snack time, which Finn loved. Snacks were particularly good today at Cottage. There were muffins (blueberry and corn) and bagels and creme cheese, quiches, and another hot egg dish, as well as tangerines and juices. Finn particularly loved the corn muffins (2) which he had after he ate the blueberry one. He needed the extra energy because it was a very speed intensive day at Cottage with a race track in the big yard on the trike spinners. Finn was particularly helpful picking up all the scattered toys that interfered with the pursuit of speed. Next we swung until it was time to sing the “goodbye song.” Finn kissed Jamma goodbye and lickety-split headed for his lunch box and was diving in before I even hit the door.

Finn’s lunch looked good, but Jamma prefers the adult food or restaurants, so she and Christy had a lovely lunch. Then Jamma drove home.

Yeah Finn, thanks for inviting me to Special Visitor’s Day at Cottage.

Finn’s 4th Birthday

Finn turned four on Tuesday and we had a little party for his school friends on Monday at Amy’s Indoor Playground. It’s my favorite of the local indoor playgrounds, but it’s usually packed and it’s kind of small. But we got private use of it for two hours — the kids were in heaven. Here are Ezra and Finn (up in the pink tunnel) while it was empty (the 15 minutes before the party started).

Empty Amy's

It filled up with friends and siblings.

Getting busier

The kids ran around crazily for the entire time — except for quick breaks for pizza and, of course, cake. We decided since we were farming out the party this year we’d make the cake ourselves. Here’s my masterpiece. Finn liked the Batman candle — and the vanilla buttercream frosting — the best.

And here are a couple of pictures of the kids waiting patiently.

I cut off the happy birthday song, but here’s what I got.

It was a fun party, although we felt a little detached not having it at our house. Hopefully by next year, we’ll be more prepared for Moision birthday season.

This Weekend in Busytown

We had one of those weekends that seemed to be over before it started and kept us moving the whole time. After a long week of 12+ hour days (including working on his supposed day off Friday), Bruce was itching to get the shelf for Finn’s closet put together, so he worked in the garage for most of the day. The boys were pretty good about playing while I made some preparations for Finn’s upcoming birthday party.

By Saturday afternoon, frustration was running high — Bruce because the shelf was not coming together as nicely as he had planned and me because, well, 12+ hour days for Bruce mean the same for me and I was needing a break from the madness. Bruce decided to take the boys off my hands and get started on our vegetable garden. It meant he got to use his tiller, which makes him happy. Finn helped out with the digger.

Bruce finally gets to use his tiller again

The ground was pretty well prepared by Sunday, but we had a native garden tour to go to (trying to get more ideas for our yard) and our friends Rob and Juliet had given us their tickets to the Angel game so we had a busy day ahead. The garden tour was really good; the last house, in particular, was spectacular. The boys were not all that interested, but they did find some entertaining things. Finn made himself right at home at this house in La Canada, for instance.

Finn makes himself at home

Then we were off to Anaheim for the game. The seats were great!

Great seats!

Ezra and Finn don’t know much about baseball, but they did enjoy the peanuts and ice cream.

Finn likes peanuts

Ice cream at the game

When asked if they had fun at the game, Ezra replied, “Yes! The ice cream was so yummy!”

When we got home, I took off for Trader Joe’s and the boys started working in the garden. They had to put up a little fence as a reminder that there are plants trying to grow.

Starting the vegetable garden

By the time I got back, they had planted everything and made signs where the seeds were. These are Ezra’s signs.

And this one is Finn’s (it says Radish). He hasn’t really written letters before, so this is very exciting!

Ezra was also hard at work on a mud pie.

Once the pie was formed, he gathered sawdust from the driveway to use as sprinkles.

The Occasional Vegetarian

Finn has been going meatless lately, except for hotdogs and chicken nuggets. Actually, even those items haven’t been a big hit recently. Tonight I fixed dinner for the boys separately — and quickly — and so they ended up with apples, carrots and chicken nuggets. Here’s my pre-dinner conversation with Finn.

Finn: What’s for dinner?

Me: Chicken nuggets, because I think you still like those, right?

Finn: Yeah, I like chicken nuggets. I don’t like plain chicken [long pause] without the nugget part.

He went on to ask me if it was called “nugget” or “nuggin” and then told me to stop laughing at him. I couldn’t help myself; he’s just so damn cute.

In an unrelated story, Ezra lost his third tooth today. I hope the tooth fairy remembers to come tonight.

Two Boosters

My little people are growing up way too fast. We now have two matching booster seats.

And superheroes to fill them.

Chores

A few weeks ago we instituted a chores policy for the boys — more to help them get used to the idea than to make sure they do every chore everyday. Ezra, being six and having gotten used to putting things away at school, is much more consistent than Finn, who often says, “I’ll do it later!” Here’s their list of chores:

Spring Break, Day 3

My energy is waning this afternoon and I’m pounding the caffeine while the boys play with the new Dirt Devil hand-held vacuum. We managed to make it to Trader Joe’s this morning and then came back to wait for the wrought iron guy to bring our new fireplace screen in for some measurement and adjustment.

Later, we discovered a couple of woodpeckers apparently making a nest in the palm tree. They climb all the way in the holes they’ve created which is kind of funny.

And the boys “helped” Vivien do some gardening.

Best Quote Ever

On the way to our outing this morning, Ezra and Finn had a pretty great conversation:

Finn: Ezra, do you want to be a worker when you grow up?

Ezra: No.

Me: What do you want to be when you grow up?

Ezra: A dad. Because then I don’t have to do anything.

There may have been more to the conversation, but I’m going to leave it at that.

Spring Break, Day 1

For the last few years, I’ve heard my friends with older kids talk about their excitement when Spring Break or any other school break rolls around. As a parent with kids in a co-op preschool for a max of three days a week, three hours a day, and at least two work days a month, the breaks were torture. My precious few hours were gone! But, now that I have Ezra in kindergarten and he’s gone from 8:10 to 2:45 everyday, I completely understand my friends’ sentiment — I was really looking forward to the break. We’ll see how I feel at the end of two weeks.

So, today was Day 1. After watching a couple of shows (a treat they never get on school days), they played in their room for a couple of hours, shooing me away when I suggested we go on an outing.

Happy playing in their room

We had a picnic on the front lawn for lunch. Here Ezra takes a rest before tackling his quesadilla.

Then they discovered that Ezra can lift Finn. No small feat since Finn actually weighs more. (This is Finn giving Ezra a “Finn Hug” — one of my favorite things in the world.)

Here’s a video of “The Finn Lift.”

I finally tore them away from the house for an impromptu play date at a neighbor’s house. There was mud involved.

Three peas in a pod

We walked home muddy, wet and happy. Finn refused to wear his clothes any longer.

And finally, their new swim shirts arrived so they had to wear those for a while.

Anza Borrego Camping Trip

Friday marked the last day of school before Spring Break and the first day of our camping trip (organized by some Aveson families). We shared campsites with the Bannings, Heffernans, and later the Brownsteins which was super fun. And we had the most amazing campsite ever. When we checked in, the Ranger said it was one of three sought-after campsites at the campground (the Borrego Palm Canyon Campground). Here’s one of the reasons why:

Bruce and Bren solve the world's problems

Check out that structure! There was even a fireplace in it. The rest of the site was enormous and the views were spectacular. We really lucked out.

The Heffs arrived first (being organized enough to leave right after school ended) and set up a tent for Lucy and Charlie.

Ezra made himself at home right away.

Ezra's happy place

Finn was very helpful in setting up our tent.

Tent!

After arriving kind of late (about 6:00), we spent the evening getting organized. The Bannings arrived about an hour after we did. We had dinner, the kids ran around like crazy people, the Heffs left for their hotel a few minutes away (Jerri is NOT sleeping in a tent!), and we all crashed. Finn was the lone exception in our tent; he needed some convincing that it was well past his bedtime and he needed to cooperate.

On Saturday morning we were up bright and early, of course. The morning sky was beautiful.

It was pretty warm already; the kids were in their element.

In the later morning hours, we were trying to get organized for an outing when the Brownsteins showed up. They’d lost their campsite as no-shows because they’d gotten out of Pasadena late, so we welcomed them into the fold. While they set up camp and had a late breakfast, we went on our day trip. We tried to hike to a calcite mine but didn’t quite make it. At one point we juggled cars to drive on the dirt road. Here are our passengers packed in. (Ezra’s checking his loose tooth.)

Ready for some off roading

Here we are at the beginning of the hike.

On the hike

Fearing mutiny, we decided to give up and head out to see the Salton Sea. There we stopped at the local AM/PM for something cold. The boys chose Freezes.

And the town has fallen into disrepair. Here, Bruce leads the children to their doom.

Back at camp, the kids played “school.”

And we got ready for the Aveson potluck. The sky was amazing again. Cari dubbed it the Anza Borregalis cuz she’s clever like that.

After the potluck we went to the campground’s campfire and chat. We were late, but what we heard was interesting. And, more exciting, along the way we saw a baby snake (Bruce did some research and determined it was a Desert Threadsnake) and a scorpion. The kids were thrilled and a little nervous. I was thankful that Cari and Ruby had decided to stay back at camp. It might have been Ruby’s first and last camping trip.

In the morning, the kids got a little play time and I got a picture of Ezra’s injuries — he had tripped over a tent stake in the dark and done a face plant the night before.

There was more bike riding.

Not without its challenges, but a very successful trip!

Ezra’s Second Book

Ezra’s second book was included in the packet of materials we got to take home from Celebration of Learning. Here are my favorite pages.

This last one he got to present to the class from the “Author’s Chair” and he was very proud. His teacher reported that presenting projects and ideas is “where Ezra shines.” It makes me so proud that my once painfully anxious and shy boy has come so far.

Celebration of Learning #2

Last night was Aveson’s second Celebration of Learning and we were lucky enough to share it with Jamma, who couldn’t wait to see Ezra’s school. First up, he had some “jobs” (do NOT call them games, trust me) to show us. Pattern match-up:

Afterwards we had a celebratory dinner at La Grande Orange (Ezra’s pick because of the super sundae for dessert). Ezra made his name out of the Wiki Stix they give the kids.
