Ugly Holiday Sweater Party

Last night was Google[x]’s holiday party and this year’s theme was ugly holiday sweaters. There was also a beer pong tournament and karaoke. We didn’t participate in either of those. I have to say this theme was a little lower brow than I would have expected, but seeing as we haven’t had any company-sponsored party in a very long time, I have no complaints!

Of course, Bruce took the ugly sweater thing as a serious challenge. His vision was to cover t-shirts in tinsel for a sparkly mass of ugliness. We had a little trouble attaching the tinsel. Sewing by hand sort of worked but it took a long time to make even a little progress and since only one of us can sew (me) and it was already Wednesday night, we knew we needed another way. The next try was staples but that didn’t work at all.

Finally, Bruce pulled out the beloved glue gun which proved to be the winner. Here he is with just the first layer of tinsel on his shirt.

And here’s how he looked when he finished it at about 9:00 Thursday night.

He thought he needed the hat to finish the look. How this man never made it on Project Runway is beyond me.

Plan A for me was the same thing only in red tinsel. It came out OK …

… but my shirt was a stretchier material and there were unsightly gaps in the tinsel. I had the idea that perhaps my version should be a little more demure, if it’s even possible to be demure while wearing tinsel. So, we came up with this version — smaller hat and less tinsel.

And here we are at the party.

Definitely the shiniest couple in the house!
